MediShield changes to start from Dec 1
Changes to MediShield, announced earlier this month, will take effect on Dec 1.
Higher premiums will be charged, in return for higher coverage for large hospital bills. The premium increases range from $3 to $10 a month for people aged under 80.
People on enhanced medical insurance schemes will not be affected.
But 5,000 people who are 80 or older will be hit by a double whammy. Their initial payment before insurance kicks in will be double that of younger people, while their premiums go up by $35 to $40 a month.

For a country that is prospering and have hugh reserves, the Government should
foot the increase in premium for the senior citizens automatically. In other words, the Government could announce that should there be any increase in premium, this would be borne by the state. Period. Most senior citizens are not earning and they have done their part for the country. Let us be a more caring and gracious society, especially when the country can afford it.

$40 X 12 X 5000 = $2.4 million every year = less than a minister’s salary + bonuses.
Instead of having the luxury of 2 DPMs, 2 Ministers-without-portfolio, 1 SM and 1 MM,
and many Ministers-of-State, just take away one post and the problem is solved.
Does the PM has the heart for the people? That is the question.
I doubt, because I believe his probable reply would be:
“Welfare is a dirty word! There is no free lunch. You must work, then I’ll give you workfare. You’re too old to work? Cannot find a job? My fault? Sorry, no welfare for you.
That is the brutal truth. Do you think I should resign?”
Opposition MP: SILENCE ……. (for 3 seconds).
PM: “No reply… well, I think that settles the point.”
“Welfare is a dirty word! There is no free lunch.
Why as you are enjoying “free lunch” and those elected via GRC. NO “free lunch” is defiend as you sluged it again mano a mano and may the best person win in a single seat ward.
You must work, then I’ll give you workfare.
How? When you are 70+ suffering from chrinic illness and no one want to employ you?
Like me 58 year old, applying to GLC and no reply at all!!! And I am a qualified engineer, and a SIngpaore registered professional engineer to boot.
You’re too old to work?
Yes.
Cannot find a job?
Yes.
My fault?
Yes.
Sorry, no welfare for you.
You talking about your life-long pension after retirement?
That is the brutal truth. Do you think I should resign?”
Sure, wy not and fight it out in a single-seat constituency.
